Yamagata Prefecture, facing the Sea of Japan in the northern Tohoku region, is relatively off the beaten path for most travelers but it is actually easy to get to with a flight into Shonai Airport (SYO) from Tokyo’s Narita Airport.
Shonai Airport is located between the cities of Tsuruoka and Sakata, and is an excellent place to start your exploration of Yamagata, especially the picturesque Mt. Chokai area and the Dewa Sanzan mountains.
Flights to Shonai Airport only take about an hour, and the approximate cost ranges from as low as 3,990 yen.
