Meiji Jingu Shrine is the most famous Shinto shrine in Tokyo, and a top tourist attraction. Surrounded by a lush forest of tens of thousands of trees, this regal shrine was built in 1920 as a dedication to the Emporer Meiji and Empress Shoken. Many events and festivals are held here, and on weekends you can see beautiful traditional wedding ceremonies taking place. On new years day, this is the busiest shrine in Japan as people flock here for ‘hatsumode’, the first shrine visit of the year.
