Sendai Castle (also known as Aoba Castle) was built by Date Masamune, the powerful local daimyo that ruled in the early 17th century. Although the original castle has not survived the ages, the stone walls have been carefully reconstructed and a statue of Date Masamune riding on a horse overlooks the town. The Aoba Castle Museum is also located here.
