What started out as a display of six snow sculptures created by local students in 1950 has become the Sapporo Snow Festival, the largest winter event in Sapporo, attracting over two million visitors from both Japan and abroad every year. Snow sculptures of various sizes fill Odori Park, and are lit up from sundown to 10pm. The International Snow Sculpture Contest draws contestants from around the world, and visitors can sometimes catch a glimpse of them hard at work. Be sure to visit each festival site to enjoy all the unique attractions, including a giant slide, an ice sculpture contest, illuminated ice sculptures, an ice bar, and other indoor and outdoor events.
