Naritasan Shinshoji Temple was founded in the year 940, giving it a history of over 1,000 years. Since the Edo period it has been a popular pilgrimage destination for worshippers throughout Japan, who come to ask Ofudo-sama, the God of Fire and main deity of Naritasan Shinshoji, to grant their wishes and keep away ill fortune. Today the temple receives over ten million visitors annually.

Activities at Naritasan Shinshoji open to visitors include participation in the ritual Ogoma Kito prayer, held daily, and meditation-like sutra copying (shakyo) which can be experienced inside the majestic Great Peace Pagoda.
